How Would You Fail the PhilNITS FE Exam?

Image
I just recently took the Spring (March) 2011 PhilNITS/JITSE Fundamentals of I.T. Engineers (FE) Examination last March 27, 2011. It was a very challenging exam for me given that I'm a CS student of U.P.  Mindanao. I really have to admit that the coverage was as wide as a rice field and you have to scour every part of your little brain to recover what you have learned either from school or from the reviews. Sir Aloysius "Loy" L. Torres of PhilNITS Davao shared  in his post about his sentiments of why PhilNITS FE examination takers do not pass. It's really mind-opening to me: Not enough resource/reference materials for review : We have gathered around 15 years of past exams (some from translated Japanese exams); received an exam handbook containing almost two hundred past questions with solutions; received a softcopy of the preparation book for IT passport; received a hardcopy of the FE preparation book; received copies of several lecture materials about fundamental

The Special Problem

Image
Next year, I'll be finally starting my undergraduate Special Problem, or simply "S.P.", an equivalent to the Thesis or Dissertation in my degree program here in UP Mindanao. Here I'll be thinking of a project that must  contribute a large part of the society around me. Here's a repost of Sir Loy Torres ' blog post about his experience being one of the judges of the best SP in the year 2009. He has always commended UPMin students as producing the most number of passers in the PhilNITS FE examination here in Davao. The first passer from Davao was Ate Raissa Yu in AY 2007-2008. I have always had a high regard for University of the Philippines ' (UP) students and UP graduates, as I believe they have one of the best curriculum, professors and students amongst the universities here in the Philippines. Here in Davao, there are a few admirable universities producing top quality IT engineers (CS, IT, IM, CoE, ECE, etc.) every year. But the fact that majority

Jumpstart Topics for PhilNITS FE

Image
This is a repost from a blog post from PhilNITS Society Davao Chapter president Mr. Aloysius L. Torres . A recent visitor (BK) to my blog wanted to know if I had a list of recommended topics to focus on in reviewing for the PhilNITS exam. So I came up with one. Actually those who have attended my reviews were provided a list of Frequently Appearing Topics/Questions, plus subsequent discussions on them. But since that might be difficult to share here, let me give you a list of the 20 most important topics. As the actual scope of questions of PhilNITS is very wide, I hope this short list will be more manageable and can help get your review going: Radix Conversion Data Structures (Lists, Queues, Trees) Basic Search, and Sort Algorithms Flow-charts and Pseudo-codes Memory Architecture, and Performance Calculations Processor Performance Calculations Auxiliary Storage Capacity and Performance Calculations State Transitions Data Flow Diagrams Basic SQL Commands System Av

Here are but a few more possible motivations for challenging the exam : Skill Development and Improvement

Cello's Doughnuts & Dips: A Unique Dessert Fix

Image
Hello there! While I'm preparing for my first taking of the PhilNITS examination this 27th of March 2011, I was looking for a shop that caters to my much needed energy for those long hours of reviewing at the Davao PhilNITS office at the DTI building at corners of Monteverde Avenue & Sales Street. Since the location was just near Chimes Specialty Store, I scoured through the shops. Missing the G12 Café which closed out months ago (which was replaced by a salon/boutique), I was finding something that will just cater for the much needed perk-ups for those stressful review sessions. Then I found something, something orange . It was Cello's Doughnuts & Dips . The shop sells nothing but doughnuts and dips, but with the additional coffee as well. The ambiance reminds me of those early 1970's-themed cafés of downtown New York which were lively, modern and cozy. Their colours of their décors & furniture (and food as well) were predominantly orange, yellow, bro
