Buhay Guro: The Students On My First Year of Teaching.

Image
I've turned 3 years as a teacher at Joji Ilagan (aptly referred as JIB). Parang kailan lang akong umalis sa dati kong trabaho  then I landed here where I met not a handful but a lot  of students. Different personalities, different levels of learning, and different levels of kagandahan (talaga lang ha?!). Well, let me describe each class or section of students I encountered so far these 10 months of teaching. (By the way, just to let you know, the way we name batches of students are quite unique here. We name BS Tourism Management sections after airlines. We name BS Hotel and Restaurant Management sections after spices. And we name our senior high school sections after hotel chains.) The above picture is me with the BS Tourism Management students of section "Qantas-Lufthansa" (Batch 2014) who are, as of this writing, fourth year students. They took COMED 6 (C++ Programming) in that particular semester. For me C++ was the most difficult subject I ever taught, for...

Akalain Mo Naman: A 2013 Year Ender - Part 1

Image
What a year full of blessings! Buti Nga’t Naka-Graduate! Nung papasok pa lang ang 2013, my hopes to graduate seemed to be fading away. Remember that I was studying at the country’s premier University, the University of the Philippines. Noong 2012, kahit nakapag-submit naman ako ng proposal para sa Special Problem (SP, thesis equivalent), hindi ko naman nai-implement ang project ko kahit isang modu...

Before I Graduate

Image
Things have been going well for me this last semester of mine in UPMin. My schedule's not so tight anymore, although I still have my Special Problem to manage. Only two CS major courses are left for me: Networking, and Automata Theory. Oh, well, this semester has been proven quite challenging for me, since I'm having a new Special Problem adviser. It also happened he is my batchmate who graduated on time. So, it's a bad choice between being comfortable with him as a batchmate and being awkward having to communicate as a faculty member. But nevertheless, I have to do my big part to finish this project of mine once and for all. My job with Himati coincided with my SP as well, since my topic involved the publication. After being a video blogger for two terms, I decided to move on and become mainly the Online Services Developer for the student publication. It's quite stressful having to communicate with the staff regularly to gather their feedback about my project....

My Life in Twenty Eleven...in Photos

Image
Twenty eleven. What a very significant year for me. Here were the most significant points in my life this year, in simple words, in photographs: January : I had my "new" laptop, a used Dell Latitude D420. February: A black-and-white moment for UPMin seniors. My review with PhilNITS. Discussions with Mindanao issues. March: Some fun & nostalgic moments with BACA 2010. My first PhilNITS attempt. April: Practicum part 1. Abreeza just opened. May: Practicum part 2. Some doughnut moments. June: I turned twenty. My first sem as a "Super Senior." July: I mesmerised with a new bus ride. Azkals became a pastime. August: Kitties in the house. Backup trouble. September: Proposal woes. DevCon. October: I turned down my next attempt at PhilNITS. I heart Azkals. Seeing kitties in UPMin doing seductive poses. November: Second semester. Proposal at the table. December: Looking forward. New doggie in the hous...

Special Problem: The Proposal

Image
Hello folks! It's been a turbulent semester for me lately, that's why I have not been blogging here for the past few months, but I was able to post things in my Tumblr log  to keep myself going. On my Tumblr log was all about the Azkals and their rise to fame, not to mention some comic relief from all the stress of schooling. Anyways, this semester marked the start of my very challenging journey towards graduation from UP Mindanao. And it starts with my Special Problem Proposal . All the ideas were pouring in from all sides, from algorithm studies, the UPMin CSRS, biodiversity systems and many others. But one thing came into my mind... my contribution to Himati, our University's official student publication. I am a member of the publication since last academic year and it paid off with a successful run of my video blog The ISKOnnector . But things have changed lately and I have changed my intentions as I rejoined the team this year. I was now there to help revam...

What I've Been Doing Lately

Image
Hello there! As I am about to finish my studies in UP Mindanao, I am to develop a system that should contribute to the software development community and the I.T. community in general. While I've been appreciating the Philippine National Football Team , known more as the Azkals , I've been very busy on how I'll be taking more opportunities of improving myself as a future changemaker in the IT industry through my studies. During the past few months, I've been already thinking on what I want to do for my Special Problem. Then I've been thinking more of our University's student publication, Himati . Right there and then, I was already thinking of a system that would help the publication improve its coverage and its reach to the UP community and beyond. During the previous semester, for our CMSC 128 (Software Engineering) class, I developed a Publication Content Management System for the publication. (Seen on the above image). The system intended to hel...

Piclyf: Another Social Craze to Watch For

Image
Hey there! After I attended the Mindanao Conference for I.T. Students 2010 last 03 December 2010 at the University of the Immaculate Conception - Bankerohan (happy fiesta!), I was briefed with what I will expect to get into after I finish my studies in my chosen degree program. Interestingly, I had the opportunity to use a social software that was shared by one of the speakers of the event. Eric Su , co-founder of the company that makes this particular service, shared to us about what do we have to do to ensure our survival as we pursue our careers. While doing that, he plugged-in the social service he is proud having - PicLyf . It's a photo-sharing service which lets you share, tag, and note photos and distribute it to social networking and blogging platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, Blogger and Wordpress. The home page tells you their strategy directly: It's fun, It's fast, It's better.  While many social services say so, people can't tell the d...

I Need A Mobile PC

Image
I desperately need a mobile PC. Why is that so? Since the start of the 2nd semester, I have been thinking of having a mobile PC with me aside from the age-old Pentium 4 desktop (but with Hyper-Threading Technology, mind you) we have at home, I need something I can bring for me to type codes, make papers, edit photos or videos, and somewhat kill my boredom while I'm in UPMin. With my current roster of major subjects (i.e. CMSC128 - Software Engineering, CMSC 130 - Logic Circuits [the one I'm repeating now], and CMSC 142 - Algorithm Design) with a dash of extra subjects (JAP 11 - Elementary Japanese 2, and ENG 10 - Writing Scientific Papers), I thought this will be a very demanding semester for me. Imagine - writing documentations, coding systems, simulating circuits, testing algorithms, memorizing grammars and formulating topics - that's a load of tasks I have to do every now and then. Aside from that, as I am currently with Himati, the official student publication, I ...

I'm in the Honor Roll!

Image
Whew! What a semester it has been here in UPMin! As the Office of the University Registrar had posted 2 weeks ago, I was eager to look on the people who have achieved such recognition while pursuing their studies. I traversed through the Chancellor's List, (*congratulations to Ate Hazel to make it to the Chancellor's List!), the Dean's List, and the Honor Roll list... then unexpectedly... MY NAME IS IN THE LIST! The list says: PORIO KENNETH BERNEJAY HERMOSILLA      1.80000 Finally, of all the effort I exerted on the 1st Semester 09-10, it all had been paid off. By passing and excelling in CMSC57, AH1, AH4, SSP5, JAP10 (including PE 2 SD, although it's not part of the grade computation), I got this very good GWA. Yes, clearly, this is GOD's grace! I'm eager to improve more! Cheers for another good grades ahead. KENNETH

When?

Image
Many times I ignored God's little ting-a-ling when I am continuing to walk in His ways. The result: cursed, unfruitful, dry. But now, I could not take it anymore. I have to be in His shadow, under His covering so I can truly hope for a future that is in line with His ways. God is Good and I could not ever take it for granted. While I am persevering in the Vision, I am still chained over by my family's unbelief that I turned away from their ways. I didn't follow them in how they pray, I didn't follow them in how they worry about life. I wanted to cry out to God - why did You have to say I don't have to worry about anything when my family tends me to follow with their worries? Whenever I am spending time in the LORD, I come with revelations about my disciples, my life in school, my life in the ministry, but where is in my family ? I don't know why, but how come He hasn't showed it yet? Is my heart not yet right to receive the Word that He wants to share to...
