Mourning for A Leader

Hello, fellow Filipinos around the blogosphere!

This week, millions of Filipinos mourned for one great Filipina.

Last weekend, a dear leader, an icon of democracy, a legend of freedom, passed away on a Saturday morning, August 1, 2009. Corazon Cojuangco Aquino, or Cory for most of her supporters and family members, died of cardio-respiratory arrest at 03:18h from a 1-year and 6-month battle from colon cancer. The whole Philippine nation and the whole world mourned for this leader who fought for democracy from a decade of dictatorial rule.

A simple housewife, after the assassination of her husband Benigno Aquino Jr, soon rose up from her comfort zone and ran for presidency against authoritarian leader Ferdinand Marcos. After a turbulent Snap Elections in 1986, Marcos' closest allies turned their backs and led with Cory Aquino to a peaceful and non-violent People Power Revolution in February 25, 1986. Millions of Filipinos came to support Cory and her fight for the rise of democracy. Eventually, this revolution toppled down the Marcos dictatorship and lifted up the Aquino democracy as she became the first female Philippine president and the first female president in Asia.

The prominent colour that blanketed the Filipino people during this rise of democracy was the colour "yellow" . According to Wikipedia, this colour connotates these words: sunshine, warmth, fun, happiness, age/aging, warning, friendship, caution, slow, cowardice, Mardi Gras, summer, Easter, autumn, East Asians, electricity, liberalism/libertarianism, hope, optimism.
That was the prominent symbol of her love for the nation. Cory wanted the sunshine to fill again the darkness that engulfed the Philippines during the dictatorship. She wanted happiness to show again in every Filipino's faces from a decade of gloom. She wanted friendship to be alive again from the bondages and breakings made during the Martial Law era. She wanted a Mardi Gras where every Filipino will celebrate their regained freedom. She wanted her nation to follow what Jesus has done on the Cross - after the death of freedom during the dictatorship, she wanted to see it rise again and live on forever. She wanted a liberal nation where everyone can speak out their minds. She wanted hope to every Filipino, an optimist nature in every place of the land.

Truly, the LORD really said in His words: "...Behold, I am making all things new." (Revelation 21:5 NASB). Jesus had paid the price for all the sufferings the people had during the Marcos rule, and He used Corazon Aquino to regain the freedom the nation once had and we now enjoy today. I pray that the LORD will give the nation more unity as more leaders will rise up to regain the true destiny of the Filipino nation - SUCCESS.

We will miss you, our dearest leader. Salamat, President Cory.
