Convictions of the StellarBoy (Part 3)

So This is UP...
Around is a green pasture,
Everywhere is Green.
But there is Maroon,
People fighting for a Better Life.
Where Future Lies...
Anything happens here...
A school of variety
A school of Freedom
Everywhere a diverse life.
So This is UP...
Where I Belong.

UP Min is full of greens, trees there, grass everywhere. Everything is abundant here.

Mediocre?

Now I wanna assess the performance of the current Freshmen (Batch 2008) in UPMin, specially from the BSCS degree program.

I did a Correlation and Regression Analysis on the relationship of their pre-final standing of MATH17 to their pre-final standing of MATH1/MST3. Here are my gathered data, based on their MATH17 and MST3 Pre-Final grades as of last week, respectively (in no particular order). This is one of my applications from what I have learned from STAT1.

Let X be the pre-final grade of 2008 BSCS students in MATH17.
Let Y be the pre-final grade of 2009 BSCS students in MATH1/MST3.
  1. 25.36; 22.44
  2. 60.99; 67.55
  3. 46.82; 52,25
  4. 64.55; 64.56
  5. 58.32; 49.27
  6. 55.73; 64.24
  7. 56.65; 56.37
  8. 49.10; 57.02
  9. 58.69; 55.33
  10. 68.05; 70.82
  11. 67.98; 78.50
  12. 55.26; 62.35
  13. 65.98; 77.33
  14. 54.17; 56.78
  15. 54.18; 56.99
  16. 55.56; 62.58
  17. 64.97; 71.60
  18. 54.46; 60.22
  19. 45.25; 47.01
  20. 47.87; 52.64
  21. 65.21; 70.53
  22. 57.16; 65.40
  23. 41.68; 39.61
  24. 38.87; 56.30
  25. 50.56; 63.26
  26. 73.36; 78.30
  27. 56.73; 62.71
  28. 54.69; 47.51
  29. 47.29; 50.23
  30. 63.96; 73.38
  31. 48.64; 35.52
  32. 63.79; 53.63
I hypothesize that there exists a linear relationship between the MATH17 pre-final grade and the MST3 pre-final grade, that is, for every increase or decrease in the MATH17 grade there is a corresponding direct increase or decrease of MST3 grade. I used 1% level of significance.

According to my computations, the correlation coefficient r (about 0.87) between the two variables showed a strong linear relationship. When I computed for the linear model of regression for the given data, it presented the approximate regression model of Y = -0.04 + 1.06X, and the points presented a good linear fit.

I computed the probabilities of passing based on the given data (60 is the passing grade), and the computations tell me that at least 10 will pass MATH17 and at most 15 will pass MATH1/MST3.

The results said for themselves. This batch may not be that academically inclined and therefore I propose that they have to need further help. Maybe this is the time that they have to realize that UP Life is not just brains, it's also the guts. I hope and pray that more than 10 will pass MATH17 so as not to lessen the chance that they would experience being in the computer laboratory doing programming exercises in CMSC11, not just surfing the Net for nothing important or just to kill time.

I hope this batch could improve.
