Cheers for Chancellor GCR!

Dear Friends,

It's another week of excitement here in UP Min.

Last Monday, our dearest Third Chancellor of the University of the Philippines in Mindanao, Dr. Gilda Carballo Rivero, has been formally installed. Read more in the UP Mindanao Website. Let me quote the introduction of the article.

They say teaching at the University of the Philippines requires a bit of insanity. The financial remuneration received by the faculty and staff in UP is below that of the academic working at other top institutions in the country. The question of why some people choose to remain in UP despite the financial challenge is a mystery of heroism. The even bigger question of why some would choose to work in a UP campus located in the mountains of Mindanao is a mystery of mythic proportions. Travel to UP Mindanao is not the usual commute. People have to travel 10-15 kms., get off at a highway along Mintal and ride another jeepney which will take them to the campus located 2.5 kilometers off the main road. If there are no jeepneys at the station, the only option is to take the habal-habal, a motorcycle designed specifically for the rough, uneven roads of Mintal. Surviving in UP in Mindanao requires not only an insanity level above that of the normal intellectual, it also requires stamina, endurance, and an indomitable spirit. Working in UP in Mindanao is not for the faint-hearted.
With this geographical challenge, transferring to UP Mindanao from another UP campus is a test of character and courage few are able to rise to. Fortunately, Gilda Carballo Rivero is not one to back down from a challenge. Coming to the Davao City campus three years ago to serve as Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Rivero has since proven her mettle, and has been invested as the third Chancellor of the University of the Philippines in Mindanao, the first-ever woman Chancellor of the young university.

Congratulations, Chancellor Gilda C. Rivero! We are looking up to you!

Also, last Monday, we, the BS Computer Science students, attended the Unveiling Ceremony of the "Center of Development (COD) in Information Technology Education" Marker in the College of Science and Mathematics. It was also attended by the newly-invested Chancellor Rivero, with the other Administrators from othe Constituent Units of UP. It was a very memorable activity, for it was a milestone that will make UP Mindanao an excellent institution. Chancellor Rivero wanted other courses to become CODs, but time will tell. People of the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science have worked really hard to require the standards that will make UP Min CSM a COD.

Kudos, ComSci! Let's work together to make UP Mindanao CSM a Center of Excellence!

Yesterday, on AH3, we concluded our discussion on NonVerbal Communication. We concluded that we must accept the culture of other states to further control our use of nonverbals - our gestures, our appearance and a lot more. On MATH17, we will report on Functions and Relations by Thursday. A half of our Set A group will report about Functions as Mathematical Modules. (Wish us luck!) In SSP4, we discussed about Thomas Hobbes' Social Contract Theory. I learned that for the Civil Government to work efficiently, there must be a Social Contract to guide the rulers on how to govern the State.

I hope that's it! Have a nice day, everyone! Cheerio!
