TOFI: Not A Sweet Thing...

Here's my post from my Friendster blog:

Munch on Tofi Luk and savour its rich, creamy chocolate covering its wafer with a combination of smooth caramel and crunchy nuts... Ooohhh, tempting...

But, when I say TOFI, i.e. Tuition and Other Fee Increases, imposed on the UP System, it is not Luk, I mean "Luck". Yeah, UPCAT takers, passing this test is really Luck, but when you're surprised at looking at the pre-admission documents, you see that the fees force you to say, "It'll be lucky if you have money like that to pay those fees." TOFI isn't rich, sweet, smooth and crunchy. It's just a plain old spoiled 'chocolate bar' too bitter to be eaten.

Look, for example, only in UP Mindanao, 500+ freshie studes qualified for admission, 300+ confirmed, but 203 studes enrolled. Maybe that TOFI is such a unLUcKy thing. Malas!

I'm one of the 203 LUcKy ones who can afford those fees and experience UP life. :-|

Poor unLUcKy people who cannot afford the fees covered up by the bitter TOFI.

Awhile ago, we launched SPARE-UP (Students and Parents for Accessible and Relevant Education in UP.) through a candle-lighting ceremony led by the University Student Council. It was a true ceremony of protest. I even participated by voicing out my feelings about the 300% tuition fee increases.

The battle's not yet over. It's just getting bigger and bigger.

NO to COMMERCIALISATION OF EDUCATION!
YES to ACCESIBLE, RELEVANT QUALITY EDUCATION!
